5th Annual US-ASEAN Film Festival - Week Four

Flower in the Pocket

Wednesday, October 1, 2008
Washington, DC

US-ASEAN Creative Project is proud to present "Flower in the Pocket," the multiple awards-winning debut feature film from independent Malaysian director Liew Seng Tat.

Flower in the Pocket

Li Ohm (Left) played by Wong Zi Jiang and Li Anh played by Lim Ming Wei.

Flower follows the lives of two brothers, Li Anh and Li Ohm as they roam the streets and get into troubles. The title refers to a tradition of wearing flowers for Mother's Day, pink or red if she's alive and white if she has passed away. Li Anh and Li Ohm never knew their mother, they have no idea what color of flower should they wear. Sadly, their father seems to prefer the company of the lifeless mannequins at his workshop than his two very endearing - and sometimes mischievous - sons.

The film was released in Malaysia in 2007 and continued on making its mark around the world by winning awards at international film festivals. At the 2007 Pusan International Film Festival, arguably Asia's biggest film festival, it was the audience favourite (KNN Audience Award) and it also nabbed the Bean Pole New Currents Award. From there, it went on to Europe winning awards after awards: a Tiger Award for best film at Rotterdam, Holland, Fribourg's grand prize - the Regard d'Or in Germany, the Jury Prize at Deauville, France, and most recently, the Premio Lino Micciche at the 2008 Pesaro International Film Festival of New Cinema in Italy.

The US-ASEAN Film Festival is an annual film festival focusing on new films from the dynamic region of Southeast Asia which is often touted as the up and coming hotbed of international cinema. The festival is the flagship event of US-ASEAN Creative Project, an arm of the GRACE Heritage Foundation, a Washington, DC-based non-profit organization aiming to promote Southeast Asian cultures through arts and entertainment and to promote unity and understanding between Southeast Asians and Americans.

This year marks the second year we work together with the Freer and Sackler Galleries of the Smithsonian Institution. Sponsoring the festival are the Embassy of Indonesia, the Embassy of Singapore, the Royal Embassy of Thailand, the ASEAN Secretariat, and the Washington Post
