Garuda is a bird used as the national symbol of Indonesia. This movie is about a 12-year Bayu who wants to raise the profile of his country in international stage through soccer. Becoming a great soccer player has always been his only dream. He dribbles the ball through small alleys of his neighborhood everyday. Motivated by a best friend of his, Bayu is convinced that he has to sign on to a selection of players for under-13 year soccer team, that will represent Indonesia in an international competition. But his plan was disapproved by his own grandfather, who does not want to see Bayu becoming a soccer player on the reason that in Indonesia a soccer player will not get financial stability, therefore there is no future, too. Details |
This movie is the sequel to Nagabonar (1986). In the Nagabonar that was produced more than two decades ago, the spectators were introduced with Nagabonar (played by the director himself), a thief from a small town who had accidentally risen to become a leader of resistant movements against the Dutch colonial power during the Indonesian war of independence. In Nagabonar Jadi 2, the now old Nagabonar was asked to live in the capital city of Jakarta with Bonaga, his foreign educated son. This is part of Bonaga’s hidden agenda to ask Nagabonar's permission to turn the family’s palm plantation into a commercial enterprise, which angered Nagabonar since the graves of his mother, wife and the closest friend of his – which he visited on a daily basis -- is located in the plantation. This movie is full of sarcasms, criticizing the situation where idealism has been sacrificed by materialism. Deddy Mizwar is also very well-known in Indonesian cinema, as director as well as actor. This is a story about Denias, a boy from a small village at Jayawijaya Mountain in western Papua Island, Indonesia. Coming from poor family background, Denias dreams to live a better life, and he has a strong belief that the only way to achieve his dream is by going to school. It is a struggle for him literally to get to a school in the nearest city, by crossing fields, mountains and rivers. When he gets there, he has to face an unexpected situation: he is discriminated due to his family background. But never gives up, and tries his efforts to overcome obstacles in achieving his dream. This movie contains absolutely breathtaking views of West Papua, but above all it has educational content that make the audience aware of the importance of people’s access to education. Lecture: Women in Film in Indonesia
Please join USINDO and the Embassy of Indonesia for a discussion of one of the world's most dynamic film industry, which serves a growing audience of some 40 million people. Following political reforms in 1998, Indonesia 's film industry has exploded with awards-winning films and box office hits, with local films attracting millions of viewers and winning international film festivals.
At the forefront of this progress are a handful of women film-makers, and Mira Lesmana, Shanty Harmayn, and Christine Hakim, are among them. Women film-makers in a country with the world's biggest Muslim population? These two women will discuss that surprise and more, in a talk that explores the trials and tribulations of reviving a film industry once all but left for dead.
The discussion is part of the Indonesian Film Festival, which runs from Oct. 1 to Oct 3, with nightly film screenings at 6:30 pm at the Motion Picture Association (MPAA) and the John Hopkins University , as well as daytime screenings and cultural performances at the Embassy of Indonesia, 2020 Massachussetts Avenue , Washington DC .
